Cosmos Hotel, High-rise hotel in northern Moscow, Russia
The Cosmos Hotel is a 25-story high-rise located next to the VDNKh exhibition center in northern Moscow. The building holds more than 1,700 rooms spread across roughly 106,000 square meters, making it the largest hotel in the country.
The hotel was designed by Soviet and French architects in 1979 and built specifically to host visitors during the 1980 Summer Olympics. Its opening in July marked a rare architectural collaboration between the two countries during the Cold War era.
The name reflects Soviet ambitions in space exploration, and this theme appears throughout the building's design and interiors. Visitors can sense this connection in the modern architecture and the way spaces were arranged to celebrate technological achievement.
The hotel is located directly on Prospect Mira and easily accessible from the Ostankino Tower and Olympic Stadium. Having such a large number of rooms means there is usually availability even during peak travel times in the city.
The building was designed by the same Soviet-French architectural team that created the neighboring Monument to the Conquerors of Space. This unusual artistic connection offers a rare glimpse into a period when international collaboration crossed Cold War boundaries.
