President Bridge, Truss bridge in Ulyanovsk, Russia
President Bridge spans the Volga River for almost 6 kilometers, linking the main part of town with neighborhoods on the opposite shore through a steel truss construction. Twenty-five consecutive sections carry the wide roadway over water and the banks of the broad river.
Construction began in 1986 as part of a program to improve connections between European Russia and eastern regions. The completed crossing opened new routes for trade and passenger movement toward the Urals and Siberia.
Residents refer to the crossing by its official name, reflecting the federal importance of linking both banks in everyday traffic across the great river. Commuters and travelers use the roadway as a natural part of their route through the middle Volga region.
The roadway handles more than forty thousand vehicles daily and serves as a key route for regional and cross-country traffic. Travelers using the crossing should be aware of changing weather conditions that can reduce visibility during strong winds or fog.
Each of the twenty-five steel structures measures more than two hundred meters in span and creates a repeating pattern along the entire crossing. This uniform arrangement makes the structure the second longest bridge in the country and shows the industrial engineering approach of its construction period.
