Belomorskaya, Metro station in Levoberezhny District, Moscow, Russia
Belomorskaya is a metro station on the Zamoskvoretskaya line in northern Moscow, serving residential neighborhoods beyond the city center. It has a single island platform with two tracks and sits deep underground.
Planning for the station began in the late 1950s, when the Soviet government decided to extend the metro into Moscow's northern districts. Its opening was part of a broader push to connect fast-growing residential areas to the city center.
The station takes its name from the White Sea, known in Russian as Beloe More, and this northern reference carries through into the surrounding street names. Walking through the neighborhood, visitors notice several nearby streets named after northern Russian waterways and regions.
Because the station is deep underground, visitors should allow extra time to ride the long escalators in and out. Elevators are available, but expect some crowding on the escalators during morning and evening rush hours.
The station's construction was partly driven by a petition from local residents who pushed for better transport links in their area. It is rare for citizen pressure to have had a direct impact on infrastructure decisions within the Soviet system.
