Kostroma Reservoir, reservoir in Russia
The Kostroma Reservoir is a large artificial lake located across the Kostroma and Yaroslavl regions, created by damming a river. Water flows into it from several sources including the Kostroma River, and water levels shift throughout the year with seasons and weather changes.
The reservoir was created in the middle of the 20th century when a dam was built to control water flow and prevent flooding in nearby towns. This damming fundamentally changed the natural landscape and became part of Soviet infrastructure for water management and power generation.
Locals often call this body of water the Kostroma Sea because of its wide expanse. The name shows how deeply this reservoir has become part of local life and how people think about their landscape.
The area around this body of water is easily reached by roads that come close to the shores, making it convenient for visitors to access different spots. Several points along the water offer benches and small docks where you can sit and watch the surroundings.
In winter, the reservoir freezes over into a smooth sheet of ice where local people can skate or walk across. This seasonal transformation creates an entirely different landscape and allows completely different activities compared to the warmer months.
