Stables Yard, Building complex in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Stables Yard is a former imperial stable complex in Saint Petersburg, built to house horses of the Russian court. The two-story stone building has a round tower, individual stalls, storage rooms, and living quarters for stable staff on the upper floor.
The complex was founded in 1860 to care for horses belonging to the Russian imperial court. Nicholas I designated it as a place where retired court horses could live out their final years with proper care.
Marble memorial slabs standing in the yard carry the names and years of service of horses that belonged to Russian emperors. Visitors can read these inscriptions directly, which gives a personal sense of how animals were regarded at the imperial court.
The site is a protected historical monument and access is generally limited. It is worth checking locally before your visit to find out whether guided tours or special openings are available.
Some of the marble slabs record not just the horse's name but also the exact years it served the emperor. This makes the yard one of the very few places in the world where individual animals are commemorated in this way.
