Readowski Park, Protected area in Leninsky District, Smolensk, Russia
Readowski Park is a protected area in Smolensk, situated along the Yasennaya River valley and covered largely by dense forest of ash, chestnut, and maple trees. Several footpaths run through the grounds, connecting wooded sections with open clearings and a natural pond.
The land once belonged to the Read family, Scottish nobles who served the Russian Empire and lived on the Belyanovo estate. The park was created on these grounds at a later point and kept the family name.
A hill within the park carries a carved relief showing soldiers, placed in memory of those who died in World War II. Visitors often stop there to leave flowers or simply stand in silence.
The park can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on skis in winter, as the trails are designed for different uses depending on the season. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, since the ground can get slippery after rain.
The natural pond in the park changes its role with the seasons: in summer it becomes a swimming spot, while in winter a ski trail runs right alongside it. This close pairing of water and snow in an urban setting is something you rarely find elsewhere.
