Transfiguration Cathedral, Vyborg, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Vyborg, Russia
The Transfiguration Cathedral is a brick Orthodox church in central Vyborg, close to Theatrical Square, built in the classicist style. It has a symmetrical facade with a central bell tower and follows the proportions typical of late 18th-century Russian church architecture.
The cathedral was completed in 1783, designed by architect Nikolay Lvov, and was one of the first large Orthodox churches built in Vyborg. During the 19th century, the building was modified and expanded by different architects who worked on its structure.
The cathedral is an active Orthodox church and the main gathering place for the local Orthodox community in Vyborg. Inside, visitors can see icons and religious paintings arranged along the walls and around the altar.
The cathedral is in central Vyborg and easy to reach on foot from Theatrical Square. As an active church, visitors are expected to dress modestly before entering.
Vyborg has changed hands between Finland and Russia multiple times over its history, and this cathedral has functioned under both Finnish and Russian administration. Despite these changes, it has always remained an Orthodox place of worship.
