Abraj Al Bait, Clock tower complex in Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Abraj Al Bait is a multi-tower complex next to the Great Mosque, with seven interconnected buildings rising together and the tallest reaching over 600 meters (about 1970 feet). The structure combines hotel floors, conference spaces, a shopping center, and parking facilities under one roof.
The complex was built in the late 2000s to accommodate the growing number of visitors during pilgrimage seasons. Construction required the demolition of an older fortress and was completed as part of a larger plan to modernize the area around the mosque.
The towers stand directly beside Islam's most sacred site and serve as lodging for thousands of pilgrims during their religious journey. During special occasions, the clocks glow in green light, and the call to prayer echoes through the city from speakers several times each day.
The towers sit just steps from the Great Mosque and are easily reached on foot from most lodging in the city center. Elevators connect the many floors, and inside you find shopping areas, restaurants, and ample parking space.
The four clock faces are among the largest in the world, each measuring over 40 meters (about 130 feet) in diameter, and remain visible from great distances. Each face is covered with millions of illuminated stones that light up the entire upper section of the tower at night.
