Österbybruk, Industrial heritage site in Östhammar Municipality, Sweden.
Österbybruk is an industrial heritage site featuring an ironworks complex with a mansion, gardens, and various structures distributed across spacious grounds. The entire layout shows how a historical production facility was organized, with preserved factory buildings and residential areas working together.
Dutch businessman Louis De Geer acquired the ironworks in 1643 and transformed it into a major production center for high-quality iron. Exports from this facility reached England and beyond, helping establish Sweden as a leading European iron supplier.
The Walloon forge represents Swedish industrial heritage through preserved 17th-century metalworking techniques practiced by immigrant craftsmen. Visitors can observe these traditional methods still being demonstrated and used on the site today.
The site is accessible by road and bus from the Stockholm area, making it manageable to reach without a car if needed. Plan to spend several hours walking through the various buildings, gardens, and workshops to get a full sense of the place.
A functioning Walloon forge dating to the 18th century remains active at the site and demonstrates live metalworking craftsmanship. This is one of the few places in Scandinavia where you can witness this historic craft tradition still being practiced.
