Storuman Municipality

The municipality extends across 8,234 square kilometers, combining mountainous terrain in the west with forest landscapes, lakes, and wetlands in the east.

The municipality formed on January 1, 1971 through the merger of Stensele and Tärna districts, which originally emerged during the 1860s municipal reforms.

Winter sports shape the local identity through four main population centers: Storuman, Stensele, Tärnaby, and Hemavan, producing numerous skiing champions.

The municipal tax rate stands at 34.45 percent, exceeding the Swedish national average of 32.28 percent as recorded in December 2020.

The territory includes part of Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, which ranks among the largest protected natural areas in Europe.
