Nyboda depot, Railway maintenance facility in Liljeholmen, Sweden
Nyboda depot is a railway maintenance facility in Liljeholmen that keeps Stockholm metro trains running and in good condition. The site contains four tracks in a surface garage plus four more tracks inside two rock tunnels where vehicles are stored and serviced.
The facility opened in 1945 originally as Brännkyrkahallen to serve buses and trams. In 1963 it was rebuilt to handle and maintain Stockholm metro trains instead.
The depot demonstrates Sweden's systematic approach to public transportation infrastructure, employing 100 workers who maintain the metropolitan rail network.
The depot connects to Liljeholmen metro station by a bridge over Hägerstensvägen and an underground passage beneath Nybohov. Viewing the facility from nearby public areas gives a sense of its scale and importance to the metro system.
The depot was upgraded in 2001 to accommodate C20 metro trains and again in 2019 to service C30 vehicles. These improvements show how the facility constantly adapts to handle the latest trains running through Stockholm.
