Årstabergsparken, Urban park in Nybodahöjden, Stockholm, Sweden
Årstabergsparken is a 16 hectare urban park in Nybodahöjden built on elevated terrain with steep slopes and a high plateau. An 11 meter tall observation tower offers views across Södermalm and Liljeholmen toward the wider city.
The park opened in 2018 as a new public space created by Stockholm Municipality in what was previously industrial land. It gained recognition the following year with a nomination for Stockholm Building of the Year, reflecting the impact of its design.
The park is named after Årstabergen, a hill formation that shapes the entire site and gives the space its character. This connection to the underlying landscape becomes evident as you move through the different elevations and open spaces.
Walking paths wind through the site with rest benches positioned at various points, and play areas with rain shelters are available for families. The steep terrain means comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the different levels of the park.
Beneath the park runs the Tvärbanan railway tunnel, an older rail line that passes directly underneath the entire site. This hidden infrastructure remains an interesting reminder of how the space was built to coexist with the city's transportation history.
