Atoklimpen, Sacred mountain in Hemavan Tärnaby, Sweden
Atoklimpen is a monolithic mountain standing about 1006 meters high in northern Sweden near the Norwegian border. The peak rises sharply from the surrounding terrain and can be reached by a marked hiking route.
Archaeological evidence shows that people have visited this mountain since the 15th century, with traces of encampments and hearths discovered around its slopes. These findings reveal a long tradition of human activity in this region.
The mountain served as a sacred site where the Sami people performed spiritual practices and maintained their traditional way of life. Visitors today can sense the deep connection this indigenous group held with this landscape.
A marked hiking trail of about 3 kilometers runs from the parking area on Road 1116 to the summit. Basic rest facilities including a peat hut and a small cottage are available along the way.
In the 1920s, a Sami couple built a small cottage on the mountain, an action that later sparked important changes to housing law. Their initiative had far-reaching effects on indigenous housing rights across the country.
