Hotell Malmen, building in Stockholm Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden
Hotell Malmen is a ten-story hotel on Götgatan in the Södermalm district of Stockholm. The building has a recognizable blue-gray facade and offers a mix of standard rooms, pet-friendly rooms, allergy-friendly rooms, and conference spaces.
The building was designed by architects Georg Varhelyi and Carl-Axel Acking and completed in 1951, replacing the Stora Teatern cinema that had stood on the site since 1916. Just a few years later, in 1955, the hotel hosted the founding conference of international bandy, an ice sport related to hockey.
The hotel bar hosts live concerts that draw both guests and locals from the surrounding neighborhood. This makes it a genuine meeting point on Götgatan, a street known as one of the main arteries of modern Södermalm.
The hotel sits next to Medborgarplatsen subway station, which makes getting around Stockholm straightforward from the moment you arrive. Götgatan itself is lined with shops and cafes within walking distance, so there is little need for transport for everyday errands.
A barbershop called Studio Canal has operated on the ground floor since the 1960s, long before many of the surrounding businesses existed. It is one of the few independent shops in the area to have stayed in the same spot across so many decades.
