Österbron, Double-decked suspension bridge project in Stockholm, Sweden
Österbron is a double-decked bridge project in Stockholm with separate lanes for vehicles, public transit, bicycles, and pedestrians. The structure spans 1680 meters and connects two shorelines with clear, separated traffic zones on different levels.
The concept originated in the 1940s as part of Stockholm's Ring Road development and led to an international design competition in 1948 with 196 submissions. The idea grew from the need to better connect the city and manage traffic flow more efficiently.
The bridge links two parts of the city and serves daily commuters and travelers across Stockholm. Pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users share the different levels, creating an active transportation corridor.
The structure offers a 50-meter clearance height for large vessels, with separate tunneled sections for motor vehicles to reduce noise. Visitors should note the different access levels depending on whether they travel on foot, by bicycle, or by public transit.
The northern pylon features a dedicated elevator system for cyclists, enabling access to routes toward Blockhusudden without having to carry bicycles. This feature helps maintain continuous cycling traffic across the span.
