Planica, Alpine valley in Municipality of Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
Planica is an alpine valley bounded by the Ponce ridge on the west and the Mojstrovka and Ciprnik ridges on the east. The valley displays glacial landforms with moraines and scree slopes, and contains mountain huts alongside the Gorišek Brothers Flying Hill for ski jumping.
The valley was shaped by glacial processes during the ice ages that carved the alpine landscape. A milestone occurred in 1936 when a ski jumper accomplished a feat here that broke records and set new standards for the sport.
The valley opens the way to Triglav National Park, and its landscape connects visitors to traditional Slovenian stories rooted in local memory. People passing through encounter places that appear in folktales and shape how locals understand their region.
The valley offers numerous hiking trails and mountain huts that suit different abilities and time frames. Conditions are best during warmer months, though the alpine landscape remains accessible to visitors throughout the year.
Within the valley sits Lake Kreda, named after chalk extraction activities that took place there until 1985. This mining shaped the area for decades and left marks on the landscape that visitors can still notice today.
