Bežigrad Stadium, Monument of national significance in Ljubljana, Slovenia
The Bežigrad Stadium features raked seating, balustrades, and stands surrounded by a brick wall with entrances covered by a large canopy supported by pseudo-Doric columns.
Construction of this multi-purpose stadium started in 1925 for the Orel Society, a Catholic organization promoting mass sports gatherings, and continued until completion in 1941.
The stadium hosted the first Yugoslavian Eucharistic congress in 1935, gathering 120,000 people, and later served as home to NK Olimpija Ljubljana until 2005.
Located at Vojkova cesta 100 in Ljubljana, the stadium remained operational until 2008 when it closed, awaiting new development plans and environmental approvals.
The memorial column at the southern corner of the enclosing wall displays a statue called The Windmill, designed by renowned architect Jože Plečnik.
