Vršič Pass, Mountain pass in Julian Alps, Slovenia
The 24-kilometer road through Vršič Pass contains 50 hairpin turns, connecting Kranjska Gora with the upper Soča Valley at 1611 meters elevation.
During World War I, over 10,000 Russian prisoners constructed this strategic mountain route to supply Austro-Hungarian troops on the Isonzo Front.
The Russian Chapel, built near hairpin turn 8, stands as a memorial to hundreds of Russian prisoners who perished in a devastating avalanche in 1916.
The mountain pass remains closed during winter months due to snow, with optimal driving conditions occurring between May and October during morning hours.
The Prisank Window, visible from the pass, forms a natural opening in the mountain measuring 80 meters in height and 40 meters in width.
