Škrlatica, Mountain summit in Julian Alps, Slovenia
Škrlatica is a mountain summit in the Julian Alps standing at 2,740 meters and known for its steep limestone walls, sharp ridges, and vertical cliffs. These rock faces rise sharply above the surrounding valleys and alpine meadows that extend below.
The first successful climb of this peak took place in 1880 when Julius Kugy, Andrej Komac, and Matija Kravanja reached the summit through a challenging route. This early ascent marked an important milestone in the mountaineering history of the Julian Alps.
The mountain's name comes from the Slovene word 'škrlat', which refers to the scarlet color visible on its northwestern face during sunset.
Reaching this summit requires a round trip hike of about 8 to 10 hours starting from Vrata Valley and following marked trails. The climb is demanding with significant elevation gain and requires good physical preparation and proper equipment for alpine conditions.
The summit plateau offers views toward many neighboring peaks and is known for showing Triglav, Slovenia's highest mountain, prominently from this vantage point. This viewpoint position makes it a favored spot for climbers wishing to see the broader composition of the Alps.
