Gradaščica, River and monument in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Gradaščica is a river that flows about 33 kilometers from Polhov Gradec to Ljubljana, where it forms at the joining of two mountain creeks. Multiple bridges cross it throughout its course, including Trnovo Bridge, Rooster Bridge, and Jek Bridge, connecting neighborhoods on either side.
The river has been an important waterway since ancient times, shaping how Ljubljana's southwestern areas developed and grew. Its flow and position determined how neighborhoods formed and expanded across centuries.
The river has long served as a place where people fished and worked with boats for their livelihood. Today, visitors can still sense this connection to the water along its banks, especially where it joins the Ljubljanica River.
The river can be visited at many points where bridges and riverside paths offer easy access. The best time to explore is during clear weather when the areas around the confluences are most accessible and easy to walk along.
Near the village of Vrhovci, the river divides into two separate channels, with one branch directed into Mali Graben. This split in the waterway has been a distinctive feature that shaped water management in the area for a long time.
