Križanke

Križanke is a monastery complex in Ljubljana that features multiple courtyards, a Baroque church, and an outdoor theater within its historic stone walls. The site includes modern facilities such as a retractable roof system over the performance stage and educational spaces integrated throughout the complex.

The Teutonic Knights established this monastery in 1228, and it was significantly rebuilt in the 18th century following designs by Venetian architect Domenico Rossi. This layered history shaped its transformation from a religious compound into the cultural center it is today.

Plečnik's redesign in the 1950s transformed the former monastery into a major performance venue where locals and visitors gather for concerts and theatrical shows. The site now functions as a cultural hub that hosts the Ljubljana Festival and other artistic events throughout the year.

This location is accessible and includes facilities for visitors with reduced mobility throughout the site. Events take place during warmer months, but the retractable roof system allows performances to continue comfortably even during rain.

The Devil's Courtyard features an illumination system that recreates a starry sky across its ceiling during evening performances. This detail creates a subtle magical effect that many visitors discover only by looking up.
