Chabenec, Mountain summit in Low Tatras, Slovakia.
Chabenec is a summit in the Low Tatras located near Liptovsky Mikulas in the western part of the range, rising to 1,955 meters (6,414 ft). The peak sits within a network of marked trails that connect to surrounding valleys and mountain routes across the region.
The summit contains evidence of mining operations that took place over centuries and shaped the economic development of the local region. Such activities influenced trade routes and settlement patterns throughout the Low Tatras area.
The name Chabenec derives from local Slovak folklore, translating to small horse, connecting the mountain's identity to regional equestrian traditions.
The summit is reachable via marked hiking trails of varying difficulty, including the European long-distance path E8. Weather on the mountain can change rapidly, so visitors should come prepared with appropriate gear and clothing.
The northern side of the peak reveals a large glacier basin and the Liptovska Mara reservoir stretched below in the valley. This rare combination of glacial features and human-made water infrastructure creates an unusual visual contrast when viewed from above.
