Church of St. Margaret of Antioch

The Church of St. Margaret of Antioch sits in an open landscape with original side walls and windows bearing distinct architectural details from its era. The building stands about 800 meters northwest of Kopčany village, accessible via an asphalt road and cycling path from the eastern edge of the settlement.

Built in the 9th century, this structure ranks among Slovakia's oldest surviving religious buildings. Excavations uncovered Great Moravian jewelry in graves near the church in 2004, demonstrating the site's importance dating back to that early medieval period.

The church served as the religious center of the area for centuries before a new place of worship was built in the village during the 18th century. This shift shows how the community adapted and chose to gather in a different location as time passed.

The best approach to reach the church is to follow the asphalt road or cycling path from Kopčany, which lead from the eastern direction to its location. Visitors should allow time to examine the original architectural features closely, particularly the well-preserved windows and side walls.

Beneath the ground south of the church lie the remains of a noble court that has never been fully excavated. This hidden structure suggests the location held connections to regional medieval power and authority.
