Skařiny, protected area in Czech Republic
Skařiny is a protected area near the village of Mikulčice in the Czech Republic, covering several hectares with diverse habitats and landscapes. The site features old floodplain forests with tall trees, water channels, and open spaces that support many bird species, especially white storks and herons.
The reserve was officially protected in 1956 to preserve the natural environment and its plant species. Over time it became a safe haven for various animal species, particularly the large nesting colonies of storks and herons that made it their home.
The name reflects its location and geography, and locals view it as a vital place for nature conservation in the region. Residents of Mikulčice see this space as part of their natural heritage, caring for it as an important nesting ground for birds and wildlife.
The site is easily accessible with simple walking paths throughout the area that visitors can explore on foot. Early morning or late evening offers the best time for bird watching, when animals are most active and visible at nesting sites or water areas.
The area was historically known for its large stork colonies, with around 30 breeding pairs in earlier decades, a number that shows how important this place was for these birds. Though numbers are somewhat lower today, the reserve remains a favorite nesting site where tall white birds can be regularly spotted.
