Ostredok, Mountain summit in Great Fatra, Slovakia
Ostredok is the highest summit of the Great Fatra range in central Slovakia, and it has two clearly separate tops that stand out when approached from most directions. The slopes are steep and mostly grassy, with rocky sections appearing closer to the ridge.
The name Ostredok comes from the Slavic word ostry, meaning sharp, and reflects how the peak's pointed profile was understood by the people who first named it. This type of place name is common across the northern Carpathians, where communities described what they saw.
Ostredok sits along one of Slovakia's main long-distance hiking trails, the red-marked route that runs the length of Great Fatra from south to north. Reaching the top feels like a natural checkpoint, and many hikers stop here before continuing to the next ridge.
The summit can be reached from Blatnica, Stare Hory, or Liptovske Revuce, and all approaches involve long climbs on steep terrain. Solid footwear and mountain experience are necessary, as conditions at this elevation can change fast.
The southwestern slopes are known for avalanche risk in winter, and this makes Ostredok one of the few documented avalanche zones in Great Fatra. The nearest shelter, Salas pod Suchym Vrchom, sits close enough to serve as a base for those approaching the summit in colder months.
