Krížna, Mountain summit in Low Tatras, Slovakia
Krížna is a summit in the Low Tatras in Slovakia, rising to around 1600 meters above sea level. It sits in the western part of the range, surrounded by forest slopes that open up near the top.
The Low Tatras were used as summer pasture land for centuries, and shepherds brought their flocks up to the higher slopes each season. This long practice of grazing shaped the open grassy areas still visible near the ridgeline.
The name Krížna comes from the Slovak word for cross, and a small cross stands at the top, as is common on many Slovak mountain peaks. Hikers often stop here to rest and take in the open views before heading back down.
Several marked trails lead to the top from different directions, and the eastern approach tends to be the most manageable for those with less hiking experience. Starting early in the day is a good idea, as mountain weather can change quickly.
Some plant species found on the slopes of Krížna grow only at this elevation and are not seen lower down. Hikers who slow down and look closely along the path can spot them without any special equipment.
