Mengusovské sedlo, Mountain saddle between Poland and Slovakia at 2308 meters, High Tatras
Mengusovské sedlo is a mountain saddle in the High Tatras at 2308 meters that connects the Polish and Slovak sides of the range. The route traverses steep rocky terrain and requires climbing skills in the most exposed sections.
The route evolved from a simple hiking path from Veľké Hincov pleso into a more technical climbing passage for experienced mountaineers. This progression reflects how the saddle has become an important crossing between the two countries.
The pass is known among hikers from both countries and carries the Polish name Mięguszowiecka Przełęcz pod Chłopkiem. The different names reflect its cultural significance for the local communities on either side.
The hike takes about 7 to 8 hours with an elevation gain of around 800 meters and is accessible only via marked trails. Metal fixtures aid climbers in the steepest sections, so good balance and experience are essential for safety.
From this point you can see two well-known lakes at once - Morskie Oko on the Polish side and Veľké Hincovo on the Slovak side. This dual view is one of the reasons why the saddle appeals to experienced hikers.
