Saly, seaside resort in Senegal
Saly is a coastal city in Senegal's M'bour Department, known for its long sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean. It has a wide range of hotels and resorts, local markets, and nearby natural areas such as reserves and lakes.
Saly was originally a small fishing village before it became a tourist destination in the 1980s with the opening of a large resort. From that point on, the town grew steadily and began drawing visitors from many parts of the world.
Saly is known for its fishing tradition, which remains visible along the shore today. Colorful wooden boats rest on the sand, and fishermen bring their catch directly to the beach where it is sold on the spot.
The dry season from November to May offers the most comfortable conditions for a visit. Shared taxis and minibuses connect Saly to Dakar in roughly two hours, though departure times depend on how quickly vehicles fill up.
Although Saly is seen as a resort town, it sits directly next to active community spaces where locals play sports and go about daily life. Some hotel properties are separated from these areas by simple woven fences, making the contrast between the two worlds very visible.
