Koofur Orsi, Federal member state in southwestern Somalia
Koofur Orsi is a federal member state in southwestern Somalia situated between the Jubba and Shabelle rivers. The territory contains fertile agricultural lands supporting farming and pastoral activities, with Barawa serving as the official capital and Baidoa functioning as the main administrative hub.
The territory was established on April 1, 2002, under the leadership of Hasan Muhammad Nur Shatigadud as an organized state structure. It dissolved in 2005 but was restored to federal status in 2009.
The Rahanweyn, Biimaal, and Barwani peoples have shaped daily life across the territory through their distinct languages and social traditions. You can observe these different ways of living reflected in local customs and settlement patterns throughout the coastal and interior zones.
The state covers six primary administrative regions including Bay, Bakool, and Lower Shabelle that can be reached by local transport. Plan your visit during drier seasons when roads and rural areas become more accessible for travel.
The territory controls approximately one-sixth of Somalia's total land area, making it one of the country's largest administrative divisions. This extensive area supports a major portion of the nation's agricultural and pastoral production.
