Presidential Palace, Damascus, Presidential palace on Mount Mezzeh, Damascus, Syria
The Presidential Palace rises on the western horizon of Damascus from Mount Mezzeh, using white Carrara marble throughout its construction. The building extends across several levels with spacious rooms and official reception areas.
Construction started in 1979 under Hafez al-Assad and finished in 1990 with the completion of the governmental complex. The site was designed as the new center for Syrian government operations.
The brass gates at the entrance showcase Syrian metalwork through artist Maurice Nseiri. His work combines traditional craftsmanship with the formal purpose of the building.
The grounds cover 31,500 square meters (339,000 sq ft) with multiple checkpoints and a perimeter wall controlling access. Visitors should be aware that the complex sits in a highly secured zone.
A single chamber required 125,000 marble tiles for its lining. The total construction costs reportedly reached around one billion dollars.
