Ouaddaï, Administrative region in Eastern Chad
The Ouaddai region covers 30,000 square kilometers of eastern Chad, bordering Sudan, with the regional capital city of Abeche.
The Ouaddai Kingdom, established in 1611, grew into a significant Islamic center until French colonial rule gained control of the region in 1911.
The region hosts diverse ethnic groups including the Maba, Tama, Zaghawa, and Arab communities, each maintaining their distinct traditions and languages.
The region maintains important agricultural areas for millet and grain cultivation, along with extensive livestock farming throughout the territory.
The former capital Wara was abandoned in the 19th century due to water scarcity and political instability in favor of Abeche.
