Zakouma National Park

Zakouma National Park is a large protected area in southeastern Chad covering about 3,000 square kilometers of varied terrain. The landscape includes open grasslands, forested sections, and seasonal wetlands that provide habitat for a wide range of animals.

The park was created in 1963 as Chad's first protected area of this kind. In recent decades, international management support has strengthened the protection of wildlife across the territory.

Herding communities have deep roots in this region, and their seasonal movements remain part of the landscape's rhythm. The presence of both wildlife and people working together shows how protection and traditional ways can coexist in the same space.

It is best to visit during early hours of the day when animals are more active and visibility is clearer. On-site lodging provides accommodation for those wanting to spend multiple days exploring the area.

The elephant population has made a strong recovery in recent years thanks to enhanced protection and anti-poaching efforts. This comeback is striking because it shows how dedicated management can turn around a species in danger.
