Ennedi Plateau

Ennedi Plateau, Mountain range and World Heritage Site in northern Chad.

The Ennedi Plateau is a sandstone mountain range in northeastern Chad's Sahara region with sheer cliffs, deep gorges, and hidden valleys scattered across the terrain. The landscape features dramatic changes in elevation and small water sources tucked between rock formations throughout the area.

The plateau formed through erosion as the Sahara expanded and provided refuge for humans and animals during periods of climate change. Rock paintings at various sites reveal that herders and hunters lived here thousands of years ago.

The Tubu and other nomadic peoples move through the plateau seasonally, relying on water sources to sustain their herds. Their way of life remains closely connected to the desert's natural rhythms and shapes how the region feels today.

This remote area requires careful preparation with adequate water and supplies for your journey across challenging desert terrain. Traveling with an experienced local guide is essential and visitors should be ready for extreme heat and isolation.

A population of West African crocodiles survives in hidden lakes and streams across the plateau, descendants from an era when the region was greener. These reptiles stand as rare remnants of wetter climate periods from ages past.
