Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is the commercial and administrative center of Thailand's northeastern region, situated on the Khorat Plateau. The city serves as a major transportation hub connecting the various provinces of the north together.

The city grew from a small municipality in the 1930s into an important regional center, officially becoming a city municipality in 1995. This growth reflected the economic development and rising importance of the northeast.

The region has a long tradition of silk weaving, especially in Chonnabot where artisans create intricate Mudmee patterns that you can find in local shops and markets.

The city has several hotels, restaurants, and shops geared toward visitors, especially in the districts around Kaen Nakhon Park. Many attractions are easily accessible by local buses or taxis.

The Phong River Dam built in 1966 supplies water to surrounding farms and generates electricity for the wider region. The reservoir area makes for a peaceful spot to walk and observe local life.
