Kamthieng House Museum, Traditional Lanna museum in Watthana district, Thailand.
Kamthieng House Museum features two rectangular teakwood buildings with covered porches supported by thirty-six octagonal teak pillars set above ground. The layout displays rooms for sleeping, working, cooking, and worshipping, arranged as they would appear in a northern Thai village home.
The original structure was built in 1848 on the Ping River's banks in Chiang Mai and later relocated to Bangkok. A royal opening in 1966 marked its transformation into a permanent repository of northern Thai building traditions.
The displays focus on how northern Thai communities used everyday objects and organized their living spaces. You can see working looms, cooking areas, and religious items that shaped daily life in Lanna villages.
The entrance sits near Asoke BTS station on Sukhumvit Soi 21 in a central location. Note that you must climb stairs to enter the elevated wooden structures, and comfortable footwear helps as you move between rooms.
A small animated gecko guides you through a 3D film presentation explaining traditional building methods and how village structures worked together. This interactive element reveals hands-on techniques that would otherwise remain invisible to modern visitors.
