Erawan Shrine, Hindu shrine at Ratchaprasong intersection, Thailand
The Erawan Shrine is a Hindu shrine at the Ratchaprasong intersection in Lumphini, Thailand, housing a golden statue of Phra Phrom. The open pavilion accommodates several dozen people at once while worshippers light incense and place flowers.
The site emerged in 1956 as a religious response to repeated accidents during construction of the former Erawan Hotel. Destruction in 2006 led to restoration of the figure using parts from the original.
Thai dancers perform as fulfilled vows from visitors who have asked for success. This paid display shows how personal wishes turn into public rituals that anyone can observe today.
Morning visits before 9 AM tend to be less crowded since surrounding shopping centers remain closed. The shrine sits directly at the sidewalk without steps or barriers.
The four faces of the figure look toward all compass directions and receive worship individually. Many visitors walk around the shrine several times to honor each face and present their requests completely.
