Repetek Biosphere State Reserve
Repetek Biosphere State Reserve, Nature reserve in Lebap Region, Turkmenistan.
The reserve encompasses 346 square kilometers of desert ecosystem with sand dunes reaching heights of 20 meters in the Eastern Kara Kum region.
The Russian Geographical Society established a scientific station at Repetek in 1912, leading to the formation of the protected reserve in 1927.
The reserve maintains a museum exhibiting local wildlife specimens and a substantial herbarium collection of 1,000 desert plant specimens from Turkmenistan.
Located 70 kilometers from Turkmenabat city, the reserve receives minimal rainfall of 113 millimeters annually and experiences temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius.
The black saxaul tree covers 1,470 square kilometers within the reserve, making it one of the largest concentrations of this rare Central Asian species.
