Repetek Biosphere State Reserve

Repetek Biosphere State Reserve is a protected area in the Kara Kum desert characterized by expansive sandy terrain and specialized desert vegetation. The landscape consists of open sand dunes interspersed with hardy shrubs and low-growing plants adapted to extreme heat and aridity.

The Russian Geographical Society established a scientific station here in 1912, which led to the creation of the protected reserve in 1927. This early initiative helped preserve one of Central Asia's key desert ecosystems.

The reserve maintains a museum displaying local wildlife specimens alongside a substantial herbarium of desert plants from the region. Visitors can explore these collections to understand which species thrive in such harsh conditions.

The area is extremely dry and hot with minimal rainfall and intense summer temperatures, so bring plenty of water, protective clothing, and sun protection. The best time to visit is spring or fall when conditions are less severe.

The black saxaul tree, a rare Central Asian species, grows here in substantial populations and shapes much of the desert landscape. This species is adapted to the harshest conditions and in places forms dense stands that support the local ecosystem.
