Ras R'mal

Ras R'mal is a sand cape near Djerba connected to the island's coastline by a natural sandbar that shifts with tides. The site features shallow lagoons, sandy expanses, and wetland areas that change appearance depending on water levels.

The area gained international recognition as a Ramsar site, highlighting its importance for wetland protection. This designation has helped maintain and safeguard this delicate coastal region.

The name Ras R'mal means Cape of Sand in Arabic, reflecting the natural character of this coastal place. You can still see remains of a mosque here, showing how this seaside spot has drawn people for generations.

The site is best explored during low tide when sand flats are exposed and easier to walk across. Bring appropriate footwear and check weather conditions, as the open space offers little shelter.

The place serves as a critical stopover for millions of migrating birds traveling between Europe and Africa. This natural oasis provides food and rest during their long journey.
