Guellala Museum, Cultural museum in Guellala, Tunisia
The Guellala Museum displays Tunisian traditions across large indoor spaces with life-size scenes from everyday life. In total, forty different moments of Djerbian society are shown, ranging from craft work to major celebrations.
The idea for the museum began in 1991 and construction started six years later. The building opened officially in 2001 and has been preserving local traditions since then.
The displays show how people on Djerba Island live and work through their daily routines. You can see bread-making, shared meals, and wedding celebrations that reveal the customs and habits of the local community.
The museum sits at the highest point on the island, so getting there by local bus or taxi is straightforward. This location makes the visit easier since you can see different parts of the island from there.
The building combines white and green colors in a traditional style with minarets and domes that are typical of the region. This appearance makes the museum itself part of the place it documents, blurring the line between the exhibit and its setting.
