Adana, Metropolitan municipality in south-central Turkey.
Adana is a large city in Adana Province in south-central Turkey. It sits along the Seyhan River in the Cilician plain, surrounded by agricultural fields, about 35 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea.
Archaeological finds show that people have lived here since around 6000 before our era. Hittites, Romans, and Ottomans shaped the development of the city over thousands of years.
The Adana kebab, named after the city, is prepared over open charcoal grills and served directly in front of guests at restaurants. Local bakers make katmer, a sweet pastry filled with pistachios and clotted cream, eaten at breakfast or as an afternoon snack.
Çukurova Airport connects the city to many Turkish cities and some international destinations. A metro system and bus lines make it easier to move around the sprawling city.
The Taşköprü bridge from the second century spans the Seyhan River for about 200 meters and is still used by pedestrians and vehicles today. After almost 1800 years, it continues to connect both riverbanks.
