Anazarbus, Archaeological site in Kozan, Türkiye
Anazarbus is an ancient city with ruins spread across a ridge showing remains of buildings, streets, and fortifications. Visitors can still see a grand triumphal arch, city walls, gates, aqueducts, and a wide columned street as they explore the site.
The first settlement was founded around 7000 years ago during the Stone Age and was later built upon and used by different cultures. Under Roman rule, the town grew into an important city and was even recognized as the capital of a region.
The place shows traces of many different peoples who lived here across many centuries and left their marks. The objects archaeologists find tell stories of daily life for the people who once inhabited this settlement.
The site can be explored on foot, with trails across different elevations on the ridge where the fortified city once stood. Good footwear and water are recommended since the terrain is uneven and shade is limited.
Excavations uncovered a stone tool surrounded by naturally occurring obsidian, revealing how ancient human presence is at this location. This discovery suggests that people valued and deliberately used the volcanic material even in prehistoric times.
