Anavarza Castle, Medieval fortress in Adana Province, Turkey.
Anavarza Castle is a medieval fortress in Adana Province, set on a steep rocky hilltop that rises sharply above the surrounding plains. The site covers a large area with multiple defensive walls and towers built across different periods.
The fortress was founded in the 1st century under Roman rule and later passed through Byzantine, Crusader, Armenian, and Mamluk control. Each of these rulers changed the site and left visible marks on its structure.
The castle displays building elements from different periods, including the remains of a basilica and several chapels from the time of Armenian rule. Walking through the site, visitors can clearly see how different communities left their own marks on the stonework.
The castle is reached on foot, with a steep climb from the base to the upper areas that takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Sturdy shoes and enough water are important, as the paths are uneven and often exposed to strong sun.
A notable part of the complex is the so-called Maiden's Tower, a structure that connects the upper and lower defensive areas across vertical cliff faces. This solution shows how the builders worked around the difficult terrain to link separate parts of the site.
