Mausoleum of Maussollos, Mausoleum in Turkey
The Mausoleum of Maussollos was an ancient tomb in Bodrum and numbered among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The structure stood roughly 150 feet (45 meters) tall and displayed sculptures and reliefs of exceptional artistic quality.
The tomb was built around 351 BCE to honor a high-ranking governor who served under Persian rule. Earthquakes and medieval attacks gradually destroyed the structure.
The tomb honored a Persian official and shows how Greek artists created works for wealthy rulers outside Greece.
The site sits in central Bodrum and is accessible on foot, though only scattered remains of the original structure are visible. Visitors should expect uneven ground and partially excavated foundations.
The word 'mausoleum' itself comes from the builder's name and became the term for all grand tombs. This naming choice reflects how impressive the original monument truly was.
