Patnos, Administrative district in Ağrı Province, Turkey.

Patnos is an administrative district in Ağrı Province covering around 1,400 square kilometers of mountainous terrain where tributaries of the Murat River flow through. The area includes approximately 92 villages and two municipalities called Dedeli and Patnos.

The region was established as a major settlement center around 1300 BC during the Urartu civilization, as evidenced by archaeological findings. This long history as an important location led different peoples to settle and establish themselves in the area.

The district's name carries meaning across multiple languages, known as Panos in Kurdish, Патнос in Russian, and Badnoc in Armenian. This linguistic diversity reflects the region's role as a crossroads for different communities over time.

The district sits on a plain surrounded by mountains, including the notable Mount Süphan, which helps with navigation while traveling through the area. Visitors should expect mountainous terrain and rural conditions when exploring the various villages and municipalities.

The district occupies a plain situated within highland terrain surrounded by several significant mountains, creating an unusual geography for the region. This position between flatland and mountains makes the landscape visually engaging for visitors interested in natural contrasts.
