Mount Tendürek, Shield volcano in eastern Türkiye
Mount Tendürek is a shield volcano in eastern Türkiye with two distinct craters and a western peak reaching approximately 3,533 meters. The structure displays a trachytic ridge at the eastern edge of the higher crater.
The volcano last erupted in 1855, marking the final recorded volcanic activity in Türkiye with the release of gases and ash. Since then the formation has remained geologically stable with no further eruptive events.
The medieval Armenian Tondrakian religious movement of the 10th century took its name from this mountain region near the Iranian border. The peak served as a spiritual landmark for local communities throughout centuries.
Start your trip from Ağrı Ahmed-i Hani Airport and arrange ground transport to the Doğubayazıt district for access to the site. The location sits in a remote border region and benefits from local guidance for navigation and safety.
A warm lake fills the eastern crater, fed by the geothermal heat remaining from the volcano's past activity. The ancient lava flows spread across thousands of square kilometers of surrounding terrain creating a distinctive landscape.
