Diyarbakır Prison, Prison facility in Diyarbakır, Turkey.
Diyarbakır Prison consists of two separate sections: an E-type facility designed to hold 744 inmates and a D-type section designated for political detainees. The total capacity can be expanded to around 1000 people through the use of additional bunk beds.
Following the military coup in September 1980, the prison's administration shifted from civilian control to military management under martial law. This period of military oversight continued until May 1988.
The facility became a central point in Kurdish social movements, leading to numerous publications, documentaries, and testimonies about prisoner experiences.
The facility operates under the Ministry of Justice with standard security measures in place. Visitors should expect standard access protocols and security procedures typical of detention facilities.
Between 1981 and 1984, thirty-four people died within this facility's walls, a tragic record that drew the attention of international organizations. The events were documented through testimonies and records that remain part of global awareness today.
