Ziya Gökalp Museum

The Ziya Gökalp Museum occupies a two-story basalt building arranged around a central courtyard in Diyarbakır's oldest neighborhood. The layout shows how rooms were organized around a shared court, with exhibition areas displaying the former resident's furnishings and belongings.

Built in 1808, this residence became the birthplace of a key intellectual who brought modern ideas to Turkish society. The government converted it to a public memorial in 1956 to preserve his legacy for future generations.

The museum displays objects and writings from an intellectual who shaped modern Turkey, allowing visitors to see how personal spaces can reveal a person's influence on their time. Through these items, one understands how ideas developed in ordinary homes can affect entire nations.

The museum sits near the Grand Mosque and is easy to find while walking through the old city. Rooms are spread across multiple levels, so visitors should be prepared to use stairs and allow time to explore at a comfortable pace.

While neighboring houses display water features in their courtyards, this building kept its water element inside an interior iwan room instead. This unusual arrangement shows a different approach to how living spaces were designed.
