The area was once a major Byzantine harbor handling merchant traffic in medieval times. Excavations in the 2000s uncovered more than 30 sunken ships and remains of earlier settlements.
The name comes from a medieval imperial gate that once stood here. Today, visitors encounter a bustling crossing point where people from all sides of the city come together daily.
