Maraş Castle

Maraş Castle is a fortress standing on a strategic hill with six watchtowers and double defensive walls made of heavy limestone blocks. The structures clearly show how this place was designed to resist attacks.

The fortress was built during the Roman period and was repeatedly modified by Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans to maintain its defensive strength. These changes show how important this location was to successive rulers.

The fortress marks a central place in Kahramanmaraş where multiple populations have left their mark across centuries. Today, visitors can observe how the space reflects these overlapping layers of settlement.

The fortress is reachable by paved roads and visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the paths on the hill are uneven. Guided tours are offered during the warmer months.

The fortress contains water cisterns carved into the rock that supplied thousands of residents during extended sieges. These underground reservoirs show how well prepared this place was for prolonged defense.
